About 20age

20age - redesigning classics! We are an English/Brazilian duo who take vintage, antique pieces of furniture and give them a new, exciting lease of life, through the use of colour and fabric. Let us know what you think of our new collection!

Londrina

We’re sorry you haven’t heard from us for a few days but we’re back with what we think is the winner of the new collection! This is Londrina, the last of our ‘fitinha’ chairs (see Rio Vermelho, Graca & Feira de Santana for the explanation of fitinhas.) As you can see it has been upholstered in a deep violet blue wool and spotlighted with red and white cotton buttons. The back has been covered in thousands of “Senhor do Bonfim” ribbons to create the Union Jack flag.

We’re bringing a bit of British to Brazil! We think it creates a big impact, what do you think?

Feira de Santana

Feira de Santana is the 3rd ‘fitinha’ chair of the collection. Here we have a vintage 70’s egg style armchair. It has been upholstered in a combination of green and orange wools which have been emphasized by the white and magenta pink, grid patterned buttons. The back of the chair has been adorned with over 5000 colourful fitinhas do Senhor do Bonfim, (to find out what these are and the story behind them, see Rio Vermelho and Graca below.)

Vitoria

I know we say this about every chair, however Vitoria might have to be our favourite piece of the new collection! The structure of this creation is a vintage Ercol day bed. We realise that this particular Ercol model has become extremely popular and sought after over the last few years. So much so that Ercol decided to recommission the day bed and it is now in production again. Vitoria has been upholstered in a mixture of dramatic magenta pink wool and a magenta and white, graphically patterned cotton. The back panel of wood has been stripped and waxed to show the beauty of the original grain. The main frame has been lacquered glossy black.

The beauty and fun of this piece is that you can use/display it in many different ways.. with cushions, without cushions, patterned side showing or plain side showing..maybe even just one cushion…the options are endless!

Rio Vermelho

Rio Vermelho may be the “piece de resistance” of the week! Here we have the first in our collection of the “Senhor do Bonfim” (Brazilian ribbon) chairs. This is a 60’s G-Plan egg style armchair, which has been upholstered in a striking flecked red wool and highlighted with black and white buttons. The back of the chair has been covered in over 5000 “Senhor do Bonfim” ribbons, (in case you missed our most famous piece “Bahia”) these are Brazilian luck charms from the saint “Senhor do Bonfim” from the city of Salvador in Bahia. A friend must tie the “fita” – ribbon around your wrist and secure it with 3 knots, with each knot you should make a wish, when the fita falls off (naturally, no pulling) you should drop the ribbon in flowing water (stream, river, sea, not sure if it works with the tap) and your wishes will come true!

As with Bahia chair…let’s hope it’s a lucky one!

Recife

Recife is todays choice – a vintage Danish tub chair which is wonderfully cute and incredibly comfortable! The Brazilian rosewood frame has been stripped, treated and waxed. It has been upholstered in a moss green wool and accented with bright sunflower yellow buttons. Recife has been finished off with a vibrant splatter of coloured woollen panels.

Guaruja

Guaruja is the new pick of the day! This is a vintage Chesterfield rocking chair, the wood has been stripped and lovingly restored to it’s beautiful former glory. It has been upholstered in a luscious orange wool and has been highlighted with large, sky blue and white flowered buttons. The whole piece has been edged with glossy black pins.

What do you all think of the colour combos?

Santa Maria

Todays chair is called “Santa Maria”, which has been inspired by the “gauchos”(cowboys) in the south of Brazil. The base of this piece is an antique club chair, it was so old when we got it that the leather was literally disintegrating in our hands. We have revamped it in a fantastically hairy, black and white cow hide. It’s extremely satisfying to touch and even better to sit in. We have finished it all off with a splash of bright, fuschia pink pins to give it a Christopher Kane edge!

We think this might be our favourite, what do you think?

Sao Paulo sofa

Today we have, Sao Paulo – the sofa! As with the chair, this piece also derives from a vintage Parker Knoll model. The wings are slightly less protruding on this one which we believe adds to it’s cuteness (if that’s a real word.) Again, it has been upholstered in a variety of coloured wools and has been lined in a multicoloured thick cotton, which has been quilted. As you can see we’ve kept the original Parker Knoll labels in place.

How does this compare with the chair? We love to hear your thoughts!
